Do You Have to Waste Food when Packing for a Move?

Food wastage is a huge problem. So many tons of food gets wasted every single year and this just isn’t right. A lot of food is thrown away because people don’t trust to eat it past its expiry date, but there are a ton of other reasons why food gets wasted as well, for example, when people move house. You may feel as though this is a good time for you to bin any food that you haven’t eaten and you may have to clear out your fridge as well. This is especially the case if you don’t have the fridge set up at your other property yet, but this can all be avoided and it could save you a lot of money.

Tape up Fragile Items

Flour is notorious for breaking through the bag. The same concept applies to sugar as well. If you want to avoid all of this then try and get some resealable containers or even some tubs. When you do this, you can put the 12 bags of flour that you have in one place and you also eliminate the risk of being covered in flour when you carry the box to the door as well. The same concept applies to your sugar as well, and you’d be surprised at how easy it is for you to really get everything organised.

If you have a freezer FULL of meat then why not cook something? When you defrost the meat, make meals out of it as these will last you a day or two before they go off. You can then have something to eat as soon as you arrive at your new property and this is a great way for you avoid throwing away frozen briskets. It may even help to make huge portions of flapjacks and even cereal bars if you have a lot of fruit and the best thing about this is that you can hand them to your family throughout the day. This will replenish their energy and it is a brilliant way for you to avoid food wastage.

Salt and Pepper Shakers are your Mortal Enemy

If you have a salt shaker or any other spice shaker then cover the top with some tape or cling film. If you have a grinder, do this as well, because it is very easy for fragments of salt to fall out of the shaker when you are moving. Local movers can be a great help when you’re moving house as well, so don’t rule out their services.

Canned Goods

Canned goods never really get thrown away and this is great, but if all of your cans get dented or squashed in the journey then this could puncture the tin and render the food unusable. When packing, think about the weight of the cans and the box that you are using. The last thing you need is for the entire box to fall through, so make sure that you pack according to the weight of the box and always make sure that it doesn’t get too heavy.
